Dealing With Primary Insomnia

Millions of people suffer from sleep disturbances that can range from mild to severe. One of the most common sleep disorders is primary insomnia. This affliction generally causes sleeplessness that is troubling to the sufferer. It can cause difficulty in falling asleep and also difficulty in staying asleep. There can be several different causes of this distressing condition and there is also a varied source of treatment options that can help to alleviate the symptoms. Obviously, a lack of sleep can cause health problems and can leave a person feeling completely drained. It is important to treat this disorder and provide restorative sleep to those who suffer from it.

This particular sleep disorder is not usually caused by medical reasons or by an environmental condition.  It is generally caused from high levels of stress and tension that last for a prolonged period of time.  Frustration from waking up makes it even harder to fall back to sleep.  This can sometimes improve when the stress is alleviated, but in some patients, it can become a learned behavior.  These people will begin to worry about falling asleep and it becomes more of a behavioral type of insomnia.  Some patients complain of this sleep disorder without any logical reason for its existence.

The symptoms of this disorder are varied and they can range from mild to quite severe.  Persons who suffer from primary insomnia may experience difficulties in falling asleep and remaining asleep.  They may find it easier to sleep in places other than their own bed.  These patients are usually the type of people who suppress their emotions and are much more tense than the average person.  This condition may be present over the entire lifetime of the patient and can also be triggered by stress.

A person who experiences poor sleep patterns may experience impaired judgment and response time and will sometimes be distressed and unable to function.  There are several different methods that may be used to treat sleeping disorders.  It may be necessary to make some changes in their routine such as eliminating caffeine, avoiding the use tobacco or alcohol before bedtime and keeping the bedroom at a comfortable temperature.  Prescription medications may also alleviate the symptoms.  Behavioral therapy is considered to be the most effective treatment for this type of disorder.  This may consist of relaxation therapy and stimulus control therapy.  A physician will determine the best treatment methods for the individual.

It is possible to effectively treat primary insomnia and sometimes it is necessary to try several different methods in order to find the one that is most beneficial.  This sleep disorder is usually easily recognized and thus making it easier to begin a treatment program.
